Purpose: This study was performed to develop a scale of nurse¡¯ pain knowledge and examine the appropriateness verification using item response theory.
Method: Validity of developed 25 items were screened by 9 expert panels, and then 22 items were judged as high valid. After do preliminary investigation, difficult items were corrected. The subject were 764 nurses chosen from 7 hospitals. Analysis of data were used BayesAN 1.0 and SPSS.
Result: The item with the highest of item difficulty was ¡¯patients can sleep in spite of moderate or severe pain¡¯, and the item with the highest of item discrimination was ¡¯increase of tolerance for opioid means poisoning.¡¯. Whereas the item with the lowest of item difficulty and item discrimination was ¡¯opioids act on the central nervous system to decrease the perception of pain, whereas nonopioid act on the peripheral nervous system to decrease the transmission of pain impulses¡¯. The discrimination is suitable, but difficulty is easy. The range of pain knowledge total-scores were from 6 to 21, whereas true-scores were from 9 to 18.
Conclusion: We need to do repeat research after correcting item difficulty, and propose to apply a item response theory for appropriateness verification of a scale in nursing.
